Makosi recognised as a Top Employer in 2023 in South Africa

Makosi has been recognised as a Top Employer in South Africa for 2023 by the Top Employers Institute.

Being certified as a Top Employer showcases an organisation’s dedication and commitment towards living and leading its business purpose and vision of giving their employees – also known as ‘Makosi Rockstars’ - Room to Grow® - through setting high standards across global people practices and policies.

The Top Employers Institute programme certifies organisations based on the participation and results of their HR Best Practices Survey. The survey covers six HR domains consisting of 20 topics including People Strategy, Work Environment, Talent Acquisition, Learning, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Well-being, and more.

Makosi, founded in 2006, partners with accounting teams around the world to deliver high-quality variable workforce solutions including audit, assurance, and advisory services. The business addresses the biggest challenge currently facing audit and accounting firms: sourcing and retaining talent by offering on-demand talent through a flexible talent pool, that is easily scalable and reduces the recruitment cycle to a few hours. Its disruptive business model is a cost-effective and efficient alternative to the outdated secondment model.

The company employs more than 1 500 accountants in 12 countries offering a compelling employment proposition: the ability to work with international clients either virtually or through global mobility assignments and advance their careers with international exposure and experience while benefiting from attractive remuneration benefits and good career growth.

Cindy Botha, VP of people operations and engagement at Makosi says, “Being named a Top Employer for 2023 is a tribute to Makosi’s people-centered employee practices which are geared to creating a great place to work while at the same time creating unprecedented opportunities for our team members.”

In addition to providing 100% remote working opportunities, Makosi also offers flexible working hours.

Boasting a uniquely designed innovative technology platform, Makosi brings efficiency and transparency to hiring, onboarding, and project management, while dedicated engagement managers and journey advocates remain committed to customer centricity through developing and deploying the highest-performing employees and a business strategy that provides even more room to grow for both clients and Makosi employees.

Innovation is at the core of Makosi’s people strategy. A focus on professional and personal coaching and development, a leading one-of-a-kind employee value proposition, and a unique workforce model enable high performers to break any glass-ceiling and achieve the unthinkable.

“Based on the premise that happy people deliver the best results, our culture is firmly focused on the best interests of our people,” explains Botha. “Rather than pigeon-holing people we take their interests and aspirations into account and pay a great deal of attention to developing and supporting them. We schedule frequent team chats and give everybody a voice so that nobody feels that they are in a silo or alone. We also understand that some people may at some stage want to move on to other opportunities. In these instances, we don’t stand in their way but rather support them. We want people to be happy. If they leave on a good note we hope that they will continue to advocate for Makosi or become what we call ‘raving fans’.”

Customer-centricity is another key pillar for the business, she reveals. “Everything we do starts with the customer in mind. When we show up to a client we deliver the best services, quality, and attitude. Not only do we always act in the best interests of the client but we align our goals with those of the client. In the same way that we want former team members to advocate for Makosi, we want happy and satisfied customers that advocate for us.”

A critical part of Makosi’s purpose is rooted in its Makosi 10K Kids Impact Mission which intends to put 10 000 children from underprivileged backgrounds through school over the next three years. The company publicly releases an impact report once a year to document its efforts, measure its impact, and communicate progress with important stakeholders. Find the latest report here.

“Makosi’s impact mission is about driving positive impact by providing a hand-up rather than a hand-out. In addition to providing resources, we are also providing mentorship and time. We are hoping to redefine the industry and highlight a potential career path for those who are interested in pursuing accounting as a career,” concludes Botha.

Top Employers Institute CEO David Plink says, “Exceptional times bring out the best in people and organisations. And we have witnessed this in our Top Employers Certification Programme this year: exceptional performance from the certified Top Employers 2023. These employers have always shown that they care for the development and well-being of their people. By doing so, they collectively enrich the world of work. We are proud to announce and celebrate this year’s group of leading people-oriented employers: the Top Employers 2023.”

In total, the programme has certified and recognised 2 052 Top Employers in 121 countries, across five continents.
